Groceries


Over the weekend it was simply laziness.  We watched Avatar.  Or Hubbend and miss THANG did.  We were lazy and watching it while they were traveling.  So they had to see what the kaffufel was all about.

Strike 1

Monday there was the doctor appointment, house inspection, and emergency foraging. That's understandable.

Tuesday Chickadee was rather out of sorts.  Without the other kids, and I don't know what else was making her grumpy.  I never do.  Frustrating.  So we didn't go during the day.  I thought perhaps I could sneak out later to get the HUGE shopping done.  Or at least the twice-a-week farmers' market.

Nope.  Beansprout heard I was going out.  He reminded me that I've promised for a coupla weeks to get his hair cut.  He is not a hippie or a rockstar or jonas brother.  Nope.  He goes crazy if it touches his ears. So, I took him to the corner Smalltown salon.  It took forever and he was the only customer.  No market, no HUGE shopping.  Nada.  Zip.

Strike 2

Wednesday was supposed to be the day.  I spent the day reading blogs, reading cookbooks and comforting Chickadee.  I halfway think she's just mad that she doesn't have any kids to entertain her.  The other half doesn't want to go anywhere in case it's something serious.  Like a regression, or sickness, or whatever.

But mostly it was my priorities.  I should have gotten up, and gone.  Like exercising.

What's the big deal?  Well, it's affecting my eating.  The only things left to eat in the house are shelf stable.  Are you hearing the hidden calories/sugars/sodium meaning? Yes.  That is my terror stricken screams you hear.

I'm writing this before my oldest two get home from school Wednesday afternoon.

Here's hoping that I got the shopping done.  Cause you know what happens . . . Three strikes and I'm . . .

Well, how do you make sure that there's something healthy in the house?
Pleasepleaseplease tell me!

  1. for me its as simple as always having eggs veggie sausage and smoked salmon in the fridge.

    sounds silly (and ok the sausage is in the freezer :)) but I at least always have THAT around...something healthy and that I LOVE.

  2. Yep. I'm with Miz. There are certain things that I just ALWAYS have. I buy extra so that they are always there. For me, it's a box of Jennie-O turkey burger patties.

    But really? Life always happens. It's okay. You'll make it. Take it from the chick who has to psych herself up for 2 days just to leave the house once: YOU CAN DO IT.

  3. Dry pasta, canned crushed tomatoes, canned corn, whatever canned veggies and/or beans... instant pasta dinner. You can go easy on the pasta and heavy on the veggies.

  4. I've purposely been running the fridge down prior to vacay this week but I would say eggs are my old standby. Love the whole breakfast anytime of day thing.

  5. Yep, its a requirement to keep certain items on hand...we get low and that sets off warning bells.

    Getting ready made stuff in the freezer has made a huge difference, and I am with Helen - gimme an egg and I can make you a meal!

    This was a process for me, and you;ll find what works for you, too : )

  6. how do I make sure? Only advance planning. And even when I (sometimes) do that, the husband complains that it's too healthy or doesn't have any meat in it. And then I get pissed. Because "I shopped on my lunch break to get that food special, and now you don't want it." This type of offense may even cause crying and stomping up to my room like a teenager who can't get the car keys for the night.

    Wait...I forget the original questions...

    Oh, and I thought you said you took Beansprout to the "Smalltown Saloon". totally misunderstood for a sec. However, I could use a saloon right about now, but that's my own problem... okay, I'll stop typing now.

  8. Honestly, sometimes the same thing happens to us. I do stock up on dried beans, eggs and make brown rice in huge batches to freeze. But occasionally life gets in my way and I just don't get to the store. Then we forage around and eat up some of the things nobody really wants! Sorry Chickadee is out of sorts - I hope she feels better soon.

  9. If we are talking snack stuff, not meal stuff, I have resorted to a lot of low-fat cheese and frozen veggies. Shelf stable. I hate when life keeps me from getting to the store, not just because of the shopping, but just because I am a control freak and that does me in.

  10. In addition to the things other commenters mentioned, I always have canned tuna, peanut butter, and whole grain english muffins on hand.

    When I’m in “good’ shopping mode (not running wildly down aisles pulling things off the shelf like a ravenous animal), I buy 2-3 times what I need for the staples on my list. i.e. Need a can of tomatoes for tonight’s dinner recipe? Buy 3 cans now and save two for the famine. After w few months of this, I actually have a decent amount of healthy food in the cupboard. Not that I always choose it, but I have it.

  11. How do I make sure? I buy a ton of healthy stuff at once. That way there's gonna be healthy stuff in there for a WHILE. :p

  12. You have to plan for those times when you need Plan B to fall back on.

    I have a list of meals on my freezer door that can be pulled together quickly from the grocery stock I keep on hand.

    Find some easy recipes that can be your plan B for such times as these.

    Sloppy Joes, soup, healthy casseroles, chicken cutlets,frozen fish, shrimp,tacos, turkey burgers crock pot recipes. (I have several of these type of quick and easy recipes on my blog)

    Purchase the required freezer and shelf items needed and put your list of meals where you can find it easily.

    The freezer is my friend! Really, Frozen veggies and even some frozen fruit can help save the day.

    I precook chicken breasts and dice or shred them for the freezer so I can make enchiladas or tacos in a hurry.

    Frozen pre - made meatballs, jarred spaghetti sauce and whole grain pasta are a life saver.

    I don't know how small the small town is that you live in but where I am the grocery stores have started home delivery. You order over the Internet and they bring the goods to your house for a small delivery fee!

    In your case with your special needs child is it possible to call a friend or someone from your church and ask for some assistance?

    Perhaps a teenager girl you could give a small grocery list to who could go pick up those items for you to get you through a couple of days until you can stock up. You could give her a little tip for her time and gas. Just a thought.
